Book review: Susan Mallery’s Friendship List

I picked up Susan Mallery’s “The Friendship List”, a lighthearted beach read, on my library app and read it in one go on a weekend.

This is a story about two women who are best friends. Both have been stuck in their own comfortable ruts for different reasons. Due to a series of events, they decide to challenge each other to create their own lists of tasks that each woman will commit to completing so she can get out of her specific comfort zone.

Of course, each of them go through their own romantic entanglements during the process and fun and complications ensue. Both women also have comedic and enlightening moments as they check off each of the challenging tasks on their lists.

I liked the idea of a “challenge yourself” list. The thought of deciding to do something completely unexpected and surprising and fun is always an appealing one – especially if you’re doing something you never thought you’d have the courage to try.

In the book, one adventurous friend puts sky diving on her list while the other puts getting a tattoo for the first time on hers. As they check off boxes on each of their lists, they agonize over feelings of acute discomfort and go through with changes that make them view their world and their own capabilities through different eyes.

I think we would all enjoy creating our own “challenge yourself” list filled with fun and exciting activities that jolt us out of our comfort zones in a good way. Sometimes it takes letting go a little to get through to the other side of a stuck place.

I recommend the book if you want a quick, lighthearted read with a little bit of inspiration.

  1. I just finished reading the friendship list. It had been a long time since I read a fiction book and I liked this one! It was a good reminder that it is easy to get stuck in a rut and not even notice. I think I might make a list of my own to stretch out of my comfort zone. Thanks again for the suggestion!
