5 ways to stay centered and calm

Sometimes unexpected events can make us feel off balance.

Here are 5 ways to get back to feeling centered and calm in those moments:

  1. Find ways to incorporate familiar rituals into your routine after a stressful event. Take the time to sit with your favorite hot beverage and a TV show that makes you laugh. Spend extra time with family or unwinding with a nurturing evening routine. Do what brings back that sense of comfort, familiarity and calm as you process your the feelings.
  2. Journal about what has thrown you off balance so you can understand why it is bothering you.
  3. Take one action that helps to address the situation. If you’re thrown off by something outside of your control, take a moment to figure out how you can create internal boundaries and keep the negative out. Then, focus on what is in your control.
  4. Look at your to-do list and choose smaller tasks to complete quickly so you can get back to feeling capable and in charge of how you will take the initiative to resolve the situation.
  5. Go outside for a 10 minute walk in nature. Focus on your breathing as you walk. Breathe deeply and allow yourself to let go of the stress.
