I’ve been spending much more time than I’d like indoors lately. If the fall and winter seasons are colder where you live as well, you know how it feels to “waste the sunshine”.
Today’s motivational nudge is to get outside and cherish the sunshine and the outdoors as much as you can!

Here is some of the science on the advantages of getting out in the sunlight (in small doses and with sunscreen!) to help with motivation:
- Vitamin D can be synthesized by our skin with exposure to sunshine. Just 30 minutes can release anywhere from 8,000 – 50,000 IU depending on your skin tone. Deficiency in vitamin D can lead to numerous diseases.
- Although skin cancer is associated with excessive sun exposure, there are other cancers that can result from too little exposure.
- Exposure to sunlight causes nocturnal melatonin to be produced earlier which means that sleep comes more easily on these days.
- Getting outside in sunshine increases our endorphin levels – these are our “feel good” hormones.
- Sunlight can help with treating skin disorders such as psoriasis.

The sourced article from the National Institutes of Health elaborates on so many more reasons than the listed 5 for making that extra effort to do something outdoors every day. However, the most important one, for me, is that you just feel better.
Thanks for the reminder to get outside!
